Today Is the Most Kick Ass Day in Months

Today I am going to single-handedly take over leadership of the entire world. Not because I am feeling more Caesar-esque than usual today, but because I got… wait for it… seven hours of sleep last night. SEVEN! I feel ten feet tall. The night before I had only gotten two hours of sleep, so last night I crashed out like a meth-head after a seven-day bender and woke up at six-thirty this morning feeling like a whole new woman. A-mazing. I moved Hudson up to a full-sized single mattress last night because it was just time. Even though she’ll be… { read more }
The Ugliest Part of Me

Last week I did a post about what made me beautiful and it was cathartic and empowering and uplifting and all that happy horseshit, but this evening I haven’t been able to stop thinking about that part of me that I wish I could cut out with a spoon… you know, like the Sherriff of Nottingham in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves… Because it’s dull, you twit. It’ll hurt more! Anyway. I was listening to someone talk about how hard it is to be alone. How scary it is to be unloved. And I swear to god, all I could… { read more }
Homemade Pumpkin Spice Latte

I’m gonna go ahead and get the obvious out of the way and say that they don’t celebrate Thanksgiving in the UK. If that doesn’t make sense to you, just think about what Thanksgiving is celebrating, feel really dumb and then don’t ever admit to anyone that you had to spend this much time trying to figure out the conundrum. Anyway, since they don’t celebrate Thanksgiving, they also don’t really understand pumpkin pie. You have to admit, if you didn’t grow up eating it every year as part of a holiday memory then it kind of is a weird/gross concoction…. { read more }
Baby Making in the UK

My son was born in the states and my daughter was born in the UK. Shortly after she was born, I had a revelation that if we were going to move back to the states some day, we needed to wait until we were done having babies. I loved the birthing system over here and how it was different from the American system in all the ways that were important to me. Today I’m over at Mummy in Provence being interviewed about my experience giving birth abroad and how it was different from my first birth in the states. I’ll… { read more }
Bar Fight

This was my 5 minute Stream of Consciousness Sunday post. It’s five minutes of your time and a brain dump. Want to try it? Here are the rules… Set a timer and write for 5 minutes only. Write an intro to the post if you want but don’t edit the post. No proofreading or spellchecking. This is writing in the raw. Publish it somewhere. Anywhere. I’m an incredibly protective person. If you’re important to me, I will wade hip-deep out into the Amazon to kick some ass on your behalf. I can be diplomatic if it’s absolutely necessary, but if… { read more }
Favorite Thing in the World

I spent Tuesday evening in my usual state of glamour: standing at the kitchen sink washing dishes. Hey, I wear a cute apron when I do it. My son walked in and asked, Mom, what’s your favorite thing in the world? I looked at him without thinking and said, You and your sister. With my eyebrows crinkled as if to imply that the answer was obvious. He smiled like a little troll doll and then walked out of the kitchen. That was it, no follow up, no context, just a question asked and answered. What’s up with that? I can’t… { read more }
I Need to Be Ferberized

If you sleep-train your baby or not, it’s totally none of my business, but will one of you hardcore parents who let their baby cry it out on like the first night home from the hospital please come sleep-train me? And possibly my almost-three-year-old while you’re at it? My massive methamphetamine habit, which keeps me up late at night watching Two Girls One Cup on repeat, has been getting in the way of my sleep lately. Except not really. I’m just a raging insomniac, you already knew that. But it seems that my daughter has this amazing gift for waking… { read more }
Best Use of Asparagus, Ever

I had some asparagus in the fridge which was calling out to be used. We’ve always got eggs, thanks to our four lovely hens out back, and I keep the cupboard stocked with quinoa and the freezer stocked with king prawns (jumbo shrimp). Who wouldn’t make this? So, everything in it: eggs, prawns, smoked paprika, garlic, onion, dried oregano, lemon juice, loads of fresh herbs (flat leaf parsley, oregano), mushrooms, asparagus, quinoa, salt, and lots of black pepper. Have the quinoa (or you could use cous cous) cooked and make the eggs into a plain omelet in advance and cut… { read more }
The Most Important Post Today Wasn’t Written By Me

I woke up this morning without a post planned or any idea what I was going to write about. It happens sometimes. I just sit with it a few hours and inevitably something comes to me before lunch and you never know the difference. I’m just good like that. Today was going to be one of those days. But then. Then I read this over at The Little Hen House and I knew I didn’t need to write anything. No, even better, I knew that I shouldn’t write anything. Because the most important new content online today was already written… { read more }
Simple Pleasures Paradise

There’s not much wrong in the world that can’t be solved with a long walk on a beautiful day. I spent the whole morning hunting flies in my living room with my electric flyswatter only to come back from my walk and throw open every door and window because it’s just that gorgeous outside. I don’t give a flying fuck if I have to spend the next week getting the flies back out. I got the most amazing CD for my birthday and don’t ask me who it is because I can’t remember, but it’s playing right now as I’m… { read more }
